Simple Decluttering Tips Before Listing Your Home

Properly prepping your house to list on the real estate market is one of the most powerful ways to make it stand out to buyers and increase your chances of receiving a good offer. Sometimes, enhancing the positive aspects of your home can be achieved simply by decluttering and organizing it. This creates depth in your home, making it appear larger, and helps buyers visualize actually living in the space.

As we know, clutter lingers around most homes in various shapes and forms. If you’re thinking about selling your home, but have piles of paperwork, laundry on the couch, random objects lying around– start decluttering now! Here are some tips to guide you through the process:

1. Start small. Organization can be extremely overwhelming when you’re looking at the clutter as a whole. Start small: One corner, drawer or closet. Just start somewhere! To make it count, try tackling the first cluttered area a buyer would see as they walk into the house.

2. Schedule it. Often, the most difficult part of the decluttering process is for home owners to actually make time to begin. Block off a few hours of time or even just 15 minutes a day, depending on what needs to be done, to make your goal a reality.

3. Find a home. “Homeless” items are one cause of clutter building up in a home. To obtain organization, it is crucial to create a home for each item and return it there after every use.

4. Adopt good habits. By always returning an item back to its home, you’re forming a maintenance system to accompany the decluttering process. Why would you want to spend valuable time organizing your home, only in a matter of weeks to have it back to looking like a tornado blew through? You wouldn’t. A great habit to adopt is taking 5-10 minutes each night to re-organize and put things away. This way, the house is ready to show off when you wake up in the morning.
