If you love to cook, or even if you don't, you've probably seen and can appreciate one of the hottest trends going in real estate these days, the outdoor kitchen. Today's buyer is trying to find the most bang for their buck, and homes with 'extended living spaces' outdoors are perfect for extending square footage. Patio areas, or just back yard spaces can be extended for more than just the grill, if you work it right, there's a whole new room out there.

Yes folks, the back yard is not just for the grill anymore. Numerous companies across the country offer custom packages that can give your back yard or patio that movie star look. Durable stone or granite countertops, bar area, sofa's, swings, and hammocks are some of the more popular items in an outdoor kitchen space. Most companies have online tools to help you start planning your outdoor space, and once you have everything configured, you can send it to them for construction and price estimates.

The demand and trend of the outdoor kitchen has been met with a full range of new products, options and features. Today’s free-standing units—from well-known makers like Weber and Char-broil—are not only more sophisticated in terms of their cooking features, but better equipped to handle food prep, serving and storage with built-in cabinets and extended surface areas. And, for those looking to move from a stand-alone unit to a built-in—or create an outdoor kitchen that rivals the one they have indoors—there are plenty of options on that front too. Manufacturers are creating new innovative products like hybrid fire grills, pizza ovens, flat grills for stir frying and deep fryers that make cooking outdoors fun all year–round.

If you're thinking of enhancing your outdoor grilling experience this summer, there are many things to take into consideration. First, how do you plan to use your outdoor space?  If it is intended to be an extension of your existing kitchen, a built-in grill with some work surface and storage may be sufficient.  A stand-alone grill island with sink and refrigerator could be the better solution if you are looking to make cooking outdoors a more self-sufficient endeavor. And, if you are looking to turn your backyard into the ultimate entertainment zone with a state-of-the-art outdoor kitchen, the sky—and your budget—are the only limits.
