Sheet Mulch Gardening

The website TreeHugger.com has some very interesting information on a type of gardening that uses biodegradable materials and is known as "Lasagna Gardening". Just as you would when you prepare the yummy good layers of a delectable pasta, meat, and cheese mixture to make lasagna, this distinct type of gardening uses a layering technique to build a carbon-rich, slowly biodegradable barrier to keep down grass and weeds, and produce a dark, crumbly, rich compost once cultivating the materials is complete. Also known as "sheet mulching', this method of building compost makes great use of boxes and packing papers when you move, to or from, your new home. Layers of crumpled newspaper, smaller cardboard boxes (non-waxed) and random bits of cardboard will start your 'sheet' compost heap, and over time, you'll want to add cleared plants and weeds from lawn cutting, and perhaps some coffee grounds.  If you start the process in the summer, TreeHugger advises you should have dark, crumbly, fertile compost by spring. You have an instant planting medium and, over time, the lasagna sheet mulch breaks down to create a fertile raised bed, which, tah dah! means no ground turning to plant, you'll be able to simply dig down into the rich compost, puncture a hole in the cardboard, and plant straight through. Permaculturists love this method.

We at The Shields Team know what a difference the great look of rich, lush landscaping can make in a first impression for buyers of a new home. This method can go with you once those impressed buyers sign on the dotted line! Call us at
